Quick Facts
• Metalwork is a Three Year Course.
• It ends with the Junior Certificate Exam in Third Year.
• There is a Higher & Ordinary Level
• It is divided into two parts:

- Practical (Metalwork Room)
- Theory (Classroom)

Students make things out of metals & plastics, including electronics. It exposes them to different applications of technology. They learn about design and use different machines, materials, tools and processes to make their projects.

Students learn about the following areas:

1. Materials

- (Metals & Plastics)

2. Processes

- Machining (Lathe, Drill, etc.)
- Plastic Forming (Bending, Moulding, etc.)
- Joining (Soldering, Brazing, Screw threads)

3. Hand Tools & Skills

- (Measuring, Cutting, Material removal)

4. Projects

- How to design, make and finish a project.

• 1st Year "An Introduction to Metalwork"

• 2nd & 3rd Year "Basic Engineering Technology for Junior Certificate"

• 2nd & 3rd Year Hard back science notebook or A4 sheets for taking notes & homework.

Exam Papers (Bought in October of 3rd Year)

Metalwork

There are two parts to the exam (Both are held in 3rd Year) :       

1. Project (75%)
2. Written (Theory – 25%)

There is a Higher & Ordinary Level
(Students choosing Higher Level also do an extra Exam in May of 3rd Year. This is a 3 Hour Practical Exam.)

The Project is made between November and March of 3rd Year.

• Students are given a drawing and asked to make the project under the guidance of the teacher. • Typical projects in the past have been battery powered model cars, trucks, etc.

The Written part takes place in June along with all the other exams.
