Tuesday 18th October 2011 saw first year pupils go to the polls in a mock presidential election. Over a week before the nation votes, the first years got the opportunity to take-part in the democratic process!
Class 3E had designed the ballot papers in-line with the official one, with a picture beside each candidate. They had previously visited the first year classes to give a 'how to vote' information session. First years had also watched a DVD on the role and function of the president in the aptly named 'Áras'.

There was over 99% turnout, which will no doubt be almost double the national figure on polling day. The total ballot was 201, spoilt votes were 3 in total, leaving a valid poll of 198. This meant a quota of 100.
Gallagher and Mc Guinness were almost neck and neck in first count, with the Cavan man ahead by 16. Then it was down to transfers. Norris was the first to be eliminated, then Davis, Higgins, Scallon and Mitchell. It was following the transfers from Mitchell (on the sixth count) that Sean Gallagher edged past the quota and was deemed elected. Will this reflect the national result? Only time will tell!
Congrats to Class 3E, the first year students and all their CSPE teachers.
