On Tuesday, 24th January acclaimed teen writer, Mr. Malachy Doyle began an eight week creative writing workshop with some of our second and third year JCSP students. He began by reading a chapter from one of his books, Run, Jimmy, Run. Our budding writers were then put to work with an outline and a title - 'No Noses.' Below is a 20 minute first draft from Dean Arrow, 2A.
"One hundred years ago, people had no noses. They couldn't smell anything, like flowers, and had no taste.
Hey! My name is Bob and this is the story of how I got a nose. When I was 13 years old, I tripped. Whack! I hit the ground. Something grew off my face. What is it? Well whatever it is, it keeps on growing, growing and growing until it stops. Kapow! It was extraordinary. It was moulded into a fancy L shape.
Could it be a nose? I check the books. Was a nose a myth or was it real? It wasn't the same without holes so I got two sticks. Then I shove it up where it marks the spot. Shoved! I got holes.
Next morning people were talking about it for two hours. Then they asked me "How did you get a nose?" I told them, evolution began with noses."
It is hoped the students will work on these first drafts and at the end of the eight week programme compile a booklet of their work.
Mr. Doyle returns in two weeks and we eagerly wait to see what task he sets our writers.
