5th Year History Trip to Derry

5th Year History students recently enjoyed a powerful and insightful trip to Derry, where they visited the Free Derry Museum, the Siege Museum, the Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall and a walking tour of the city walls. The visit brought their classroom learning about Politics and Society in Northern Ireland (1949–1993) to life.

They had the unique opportunity to speak with relatives of those who were killed on Bloody Sunday, gaining personal insights into one of the most significant and tragic events of the Troubles. They were also able to handle the different types of bullets used during the conflict and hear reports of key historical moments, deepening their understanding of the human impact of these political events.

Visits to buildings associated with the Siege of Derry and Bloody Sunday offered further context to the city’s divided history and enriched the students’ grasp of its complex heritage. They returned with a greater appreciation of their local history and new insights that will support them in next year’s Leaving Cert exam.
