Yesterday, three 5th Year Politics and Society students travelled to Dáil Éireann to take part in the first annual Oireachtas Schools Quiz, an event to mark Oireachtas na nÓg and deepen student engagement with national politics. Carndonagh Community School was one of only 30 schools invited from across the country, making the occasion a significant honour for the students and the school.
The quiz focused on Irish politics, current affairs, and the work of the Oireachtas. Students competed in mixed rounds alongside schools from a range of counties, testing their knowledge of the Constitution, parliamentary procedure, and recent political developments. The event encouraged teamwork, quick recall, and confidence in applying their Politics and Society learning in a real public forum.
During the visit, the students also had the opportunity to meet TD Marie Sherlock, who spoke to them about her work in Dáil Éireann and the issues currently shaping national debate. The conversation offered valuable insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of public representatives and the importance of informed civic participation.
The group received a short tour of Trinity College Dublin after for college awareness week.
Overall, the students represented the school exceptionally well, gaining a memorable and practical understanding of how Ireland’s political institutions operate. The inaugural quiz provided a unique opportunity to experience active citizenship in a national setting.
