European Day of Languages 2023

After the success of last year's event, European Day of Languages took place again this year on Tuesday 26th September. The MFL, Irish and Home Economic departments rose to the occasion of organising and celebrating a very successful event. A special word of thanks goes to Ms Grace Connor who ensured that nothing was left out in the lead up to the event and on the day itself.

Lots of posters were designed and decorated by TYs and the Junior classes and research was carried out about the different European Languages in the language classes. A video and an escape room styled quiz was shown to the language classes to introduce the day, as well as lots of buying, organising and cooking.

Preparation of the Áras took place during periods 1-3. Each year group was given the opportunity (accompanied by their subject teacher) to go to the Áras to take part in the different activities: a language quiz; tasting a variety of different foods; sample Crepes and Churros made by the hardworking TY students; watching Irish dancing and listening to traditional Irish and Ukrainian music. Period 4 was designated to 5th Years, Period 5 was designated to 2nd Years, and Period 6 was designated to 1st Years. The 3rd years, 6th years and remainder of the Transition Year students were given the opportunity to come to the Áras during lunchtime.

The TY students did a fantastic job of setting up and cleaning the Áras, correcting quizzes and assisting teachers throughout the day. They were flat out!! Ms. Linda Corrigan Mc Gonagle organised the fantastic Irish Dancers. Photography for the event was managed by Ms. Yvonne O'Brien, Alva Mc Laughlin and Maria O’ Kane (TYF). Many thanks to everyone who helped out in any way to ensure that European Day of Languages was a success.
