After a break of four years, the Language Departments rose to the occasion of organising and celebrating a very successful European Day of Language. It was spearheaded by Ms Grace Connor with the assistance of Ms Lorraine McDaid and Ms. Yvonne Doherty.
Lots of posters were designed and decorated, food labels were printed, research was carried out about the different European Languages in the language classes. A video was shown to the language classes from the EDL website to introduce the day, as well as lots of buying, organising and cooking!
Preparation of the Áras took place during periods 1-3. Each year group was given the opportunity (accompanied by their subject teacher) to go to the Áras to take part in the different activities: a language quiz; tasting a variety of different foods; listening to traditional Irish music; watching Irish dancing; the chance to win in the free raffle! Period 4 was designated to 1st Years, Period 5 was designated to 2nd Years, and Period 6 was designated to 5th Years. The 3rd years, 6th years and remainder of the Transition Year students were given the opportunity to come to the Áras during lunchtime.
The assistants/helpers did a great job of cleaning the Áras and returning all borrowed utensils to the different teachers/classrooms, washing dishes, sorting out the rubbish and assisting the teachers in charge. Photography for the event was managed by Ms. Yvonne O'Brien and Clodagh Power TYE. Many thanks to everyone who helped make the Day of Languages a success.
