TY Horticulture Roundup

It's been a busy year for TYs in their Horticulture module this year. Students carried out workshops in seed saving. Students organised and set up a fully automatic watering system in the school polytunnel. This is an efficient way that plants will get watered in the morning and evening daily. Students planted saved seed from last year including, Capetown Gooseberry, Pumpkins, Peas, Broad Beans and Potatoes.

Students have carried out an extensive survey of biodiversity on the school grounds, counting the number of trees, hedgerows and the total area of No Mow spaces. They found that there was 1,562 trees on the grounds, of which 97% of these were native to Ireland. They found that the school has an area of 3,425 metres squared of No Mow meadows.

They entered the school into the HERO Biodiversity awards for schools with all the information they collected in the survey and won a Bronze Badger award. They also received a Bosca Dúlra which contained 30 sunflower planting kit. Well done to all that helped with the survey!!

Finally, a Red Admiral pictured, we found in the polytunnel this week.
